Core Program

Our Year 1 English program provides your child with an advanced and comprehensive exploration of literacy. Skills and competencies across all aspects of language are thoroughly investigated. The program covers concepts at a slightly more advanced level than your child will encounter at school.

Course Goals
  • Develop literal and inferential comprehensions skills
  • Develop spelling skills
  • Develop vocabulary skills
  • Develop grammar and punctuation skills
Course Structure
  • English (Reading Comprehension, Grammar, Vocabulary)
  • 4 terms in a year, 10 weeks in a term
  • 1.5 hour lessons per week, during term
  • Students attend lessons at their allocated time schedule
  • Small class group based

Year 1 ENGLISH

Term 1
Week 1 — Creative Writing, Comprehension, “s” blends, Plural
Week 2 — Creative Writing, Comprehension, “l” blends, Adjectives
Week 3 — Anagrams, Comprehension, “L” blends, Adjectives and Verbs
Week 4 — Anagrams, Sequencing, Main idea, Adjectives, “is” & “are”
Week 5 — Cloze passage, comprehension, verbs
Week 6 — Comprehension, past tense verbs, cloze passage
Week 7 — Comprehension, past tense verbs, cloze passage, rhyming words
Week 8 — Term test, comprehension, associations, compound words
Week 9 — Comprehension, Misspelt words, rhyming words, analogies, “sh” words
Week 10 — Comprehension, classification, order of size, digraph “ch”

Term 2
Week 1 — Writing: Personal response, sentences, feeling words, opposites
Week 2 — Writing: Description, action verbs, plurals, adjectives
Week 3 — Writing: Explanation, past tense, verbs, synonyms, inferences
Week 4 — Writing: Description, comparatives, was and were, Is/Are/Am
Week 5 — Writing: recount, proper nouns, homonyms, compound words
Week 6 — Writing: Description, contractions, proper nouns, homophones
Week 7 — Writing: Procedure, proper nouns, action verbs, past tense verbs
Week 8 — Term test, writing: Recount, words in words, compound words, plurals
Week 9 — Writing: Explanation, prefixes “in” & “un”, tongue twister, action verbs, past-tense verbs
Week 10 — Writing: Description, homonyms, suffix- “ing”, following instructions

Term 3
Week 1 — Creative Writing, comprehension, cloze passage, vocabulary, analogies
Week 2 — Writing sentences, comprehension, cloze passage vocabulary, past tense – regular
Week 3 — Creative Writing, comprehension, cloze passage, vocabulary, describing words – “er”
Week 4 — Creative writing, identifying sentences, Handwriting skills, animal vocabulary
Week 5 — Comprehension, vocabulary, guided writing, similes
Week 6 — Comprehension, plurals, creative writing, writing sentences, associations
Week 7 — Comprehension – the sea Horse, Vocabulary, Analogies, creative writing
Week 8 — Term test, comprehension, creative writing, opposites, vocabulary, analogies
Week 9 — Comprehension, creative writing, word puzzles, vocabulary – cooking tools
Week 10 — Comprehension, creative writing, association, 3 letter blends – spr & spl

Term 4
Week 1 — Writing: Recount, Animal sounds, Finding clues and main Idea
Week 2 — Writing: Recount, three-letter blends: “scr” & “str”, cloze passage, alphabetical order
Week 3 — Writing: Description, sequencing, finding the main idea, spelling mistakes
Week 4 — Writing: Description, silent letters, context clues
Week 5 — Writing: Recount, capitalisation, silent letters, past tense verbs
Week 6 — Writing: Descriptive recount, silent consonants, context clues
Week 7 — Writing: Explanation, silent consonants, contractions, using context clues
Week 8 — Term Test
Week 9 — Writing: Descriptive recount, linking verbs, comparatives
Week 10 — Writing: Imaginative recount, linking verbs, comparatives
