Core Program

A comprehensive course that develops your child’s potential in the key subject area of English. Each lesson contains 90 minutes dedicated to developing literacy.

Course Goals
  • Develop advanced literal and inferential comprehensions skills
  • Develop competency and creativity in writing across a range of text types
  • Develop superior spelling skills
  • Develop an advanced vocabulary
  • Develop grammar, usage and punctuation skills
Course Structure
  • 4 terms in a year, 10 weeks in a term
  • 1.5 hour lessons per week, during term
  • Students attend lessons at their allocated time schedule

Year 2 English

Term 1
Week 1 — Writing: Description, action verbs, phrase and clause, common nouns
Week 2 — Writing: Description, grammar, cloze passage, linking verbs
Week 3 — Writing: Explanation, pronouns, cause and effect, drawing conclusions
Week 4 — Writing: Description, collections, sounds of animals, contractions
Week 5 — Writing: Imaginative, verbs, sounds of animals, homophones
Week 6 — Writing: Imaginative, emotive words, vocabulary, cloze passage
Week 7 — Writing: Description, conjunctions, adjectives, prepositions, similes
Week 8 — Writing: Description, Term test, creative thinking, prefixes “dis” & “mis”
Week 9 — Writing: Description, occupation words, plural nouns, abbreviations & Acronyms
Week 10 — Writing: Description, adjectives, “S” blends, comparative & superlative

Term 2
Week 1 — Writing: Description, contractions, collective nouns, correcting sentences
Week 2 — Writing: Description, vocabulary, similes, analogies, nouns
Week 3 — Writing: Recount, cloze passage, homophones, vocabulary, categories
Week 4 — Writing: Recount, abbreviations, plurals, pronouns, categories
Week 5 — Writing: Description, suffixes, places, adjectives, rhyming words
Week 6 — Writing: Description, past & present tense, powerful verbs, adverbs, plurals
Week 7 — Writing: Description, better words, occupations, finding the main idea, places
Week 8 — Term test, Writing: Recount, common and proper nouns, vocabulary, alphabetical order
Week 9 — Writing: Description, better words for “said”, adjectives, sports & hobbies
Week 10 — Writing: Description, synonyms, context clues, adjectives for people, riddles

Term 3
Week 1 — Creative writing, comprehension, vocabulary
Week 2 — Creative writing, comprehension, noun & verb agreement, mononyms, gender words
Week 3 — Creative writing, comprehension, constructing questions, gender words
Week 4 — Creative writing, comprehension, cloze passages, reading advertisements
Week 5 — Creative writing, comprehension, prepositions, plurals, career vocabulary
Week 6 — Creative writing, comprehension, cloze, capitalization & punctuation, action words
Week 7 — Creative writing, comprehension, vocabulary, language patterns – verbs
Week 8 — Term test, creative writing, comprehension, vocabulary, dictionary skills, word puzzles
Week 9 — Creative writing, comprehension, vocabulary, punctuation, contractions
Week 10 — Creative writing, comprehension, vowels & consonants, punctuation, plurals

Term 4
Week 1 — Writing: Recount, spelling, apostrophes, adverbs, root words
Week 2 — Writing: Recount, beginnings and endings, sentences
Week 3 — Writing: Narrative, homophones, prepositions, collective nouns, adjectives
Week 4 — Writing: Recount, subject and verbs agreement, sentence types, anatomy
Week 5 — Writing: Narrative, diary entry, homophones, informative texts
Week 6 — Writing: Description, tongue twisters, “ex” words, crosswords
Week 7 — Writing: Description, prefixes, vocabulary, subject-verb
Week 8 — Term Test
Week 9 — Writing: Description, prefix and suffix, compound words, collective nouns
Week 10 — Writing: Letter, synonyms and antonyms, compound word
