Year 3 English (WA)

Core Program

A comprehensive course that develops your child’s potential in the key subject area of English. Each lesson contains 90 minutes dedicated to developing literacy.

Course Goals
  • Develop advanced literal and inferential comprehensions skills
  • Develop competency and creativity in writing across a range of text types
  • Develop superior spelling skills
  • Develop an advanced vocabulary
  • Develop grammar, usage and punctuation skills
Course Structure
  • 4 terms in a year, 10 weeks in a term
  • 1.5 hour lessons per week, during term
  • Can be combined with Creative Writing (English + Creative Writing: 2 hour lessons per week)
  • Can be combined with Maths & General Ability (English + Maths & General Ability: 3 hour lessons per week)
  • Students attend lessons at their allocated time schedule
  • Small class group based

Week 4 — Comprehension, Vocabulary, collective nouns, Anagrams, semantics
Week 5 — Comprehension, Vocabulary, Singular & Plural nouns
Week 6 — Comprehension, Vocabulary, Nouns, prefixs & suffixes
Week 7 — Comprehension, Vocabulary, Articles
Week 8 — Term test, Comprehension, Vocabulary, Personal pronouns, diary entry
Week 9 — Comprehension, Vocabulary, personal pronouns – 2, “oi” as in coin, “el” as camel
Week 10 — Comprehension, Vocabulary, Homophones, possessive pronouns, silent “W” as wrist

Term 2
Week 1 — Comprehension, Vocabulary, Adjectives, Singular & Plural nouns
Week 2 — Comprehension, Vocabulary, more adjectives, compound words
Week 3 — Comprehension, Vocabulary, possessive adjectives, contractions, mononyms
Week 4 — Comprehension, Vocabulary, pointing adjectives, punctuation, collective nouns
Week 5 — Comprehension, Vocabulary, Comparing adjectives, Am/is/are, antonyms, homophone
Week 6 — Comprehension, Vocabulary, verbs, abstract noun, Antonyms
Week 7 — Comprehension, Vocabulary, saying & thinking verbs, Antonyms
Week 8 — Term test, Comprehension, Psst tense verbs, The magic square.
Week 9 — Comprehension, Vocabulary, fun with verbs, letters jumble, cloze comprehension
Week 10 — Comprehension, Vocabulary, “to do”, better word than “got”, hidden words, spelling

Term 3
Week 1 — Grammar skills, developing comprehension skills, expanding vocabulary, word scramble
Week 2 — Grammar skills-verbs, comprehension skills, vocabulary, word similarities
Week 3 — Contractions, comprehension – myths & legends, vocabulary, limericks
Week 4 — Contractions, comprehension – etiquette, vocabulary, past tense, adjectives
Week 5 — Contractions, comprehension-news articles, vocabulary, describing people, cloze activities
Week 6 — Adverbs, comprehension – poetry, vocabulary, compound words, Homophones
Week 7 — Adverbs-II, comprehension – narrative, vocabulary, Nouns, adjectives & verbs
Week 8 — Term test, Adverbs-III, comprehension – skimming& cloze, vocabulary, Antonyms
