Core Program

A comprehensive course that develops your child’s potential in the key subject areas of Mathematics and General Ability. Each lesson contains 90 minutes of training in numeracy and thinking skills.

Course Goals
  • Develop advanced knowledge of numbers in thousands and beyond
  • Develop numerical operations
  • Develop understandings of fractions and decimals
  • Develop a range of thinking skills (general ability) concepts
  • Develop concepts of area, time and measurement using formal & informal units
  • Develop concepts of graphing, money, chance and probability
  • Develop concepts of shape, position and temperature
  • Develop basic exam techniques and problem solving skills
Course Structure
  • 4 terms in a year, 10 weeks in a term
  • 1.5 hour lessons per week, during term
  • Can be combined with Creative Writing (Maths & General Ability + Creative Writing: 2 hour lessons per week)
  • Can be combined with English (English, Maths & General Ability: 3 hour lessons per week)
  • Students attend lessons at their allocated time schedule
  • Small class group based

Year 4 Maths & Reasoning Skills

Term 1
Week 1 — Line graphs, problem solving, averages, preparation of O.C. class
Week 2 — Drawing line graphs, problem solving, direct proportions, O.C. Class
Week 3 — BODMAS, speed an accuracy, problem solving, O.C class
Week 4 — Multiplication with decimals, problem solving, factors, O.C. class
Week 5 — Multiples, problem solving, divisibility rules: 3, 6, 9 , O.C. class
Week 6 — Revision, volume – cubic centimetres, rounding – decimals, O.C. class
Week 7 — Revision, volume – cubic centimetres, rounding – decimals, O.C. class
Week 8 — Term Test, nets of 3D objects, revision – percentages, O.C. class
Week 9 — Addition of fractions, properties of triangles, revision – maps & coordinates, O.C. class
Week 10 — Time conversions and time zones, perspective, revision – column graphs, O.C. class

Term 2
Week 1 — Addition & Subtraction of Decimals, problem solving, preparation of O.C. class
Week 2 — Equivalent fractions, manipulating fractions, PS, Averages & Line graphs, O.C. Class
Week 3 — Addition of fractions, lengths, decimals application, PS, speed & Accuracy, O.C class
Week 4 — Subtraction of fractions, mass-gram, kilogram, PS, speed & Accuracy, O.C. class
Week 5 — Subtraction of fractions, time: Analogue/digital time, PS, O.C. class
Week 6 — Two-way tables, addition & subtraction of Decimals, LCM, O.C. class
Week 7 — Further decimals, negative numbers, exam practice, O.C. class
Week 8 — Term Test, Revision – Decimals, Revision – Factors, O.C. class
Week 9 — Complex decimal division, multiples, revision of line graph, exam practice, O.C. class
Week 10 — Square and cube numbers, average speed, PS, exam practice, OC class preparation

Term 3
Week 1 — Prime & Composite numbers, PS – picture aid, LCM, exam practice
Week 2 — Logic and lateral thinking, revision test, PS – drawing pictures, exam practice
Week 3 — Divisibility tests, PS-drawing pictures, exam practice, logic & lateral thinking corner
Week 4 — Divisibility tests for 6,9,10, PS – sums & differences, logic & lateral thinking
Week 5 — Revision-graphs, PS-making comparisons, divisibility tests for 8 & 11
Week 6 — Revision – Area & Perimeter, column graphs, PS, speed & Accuracy
Week 7 — Extended Area, Area & Perimeter, speed & Accuracy
Week 8 — Term Test, Decimals & Fractions, PS – Money
Week 9 — Area & Perimeter, Reading graphs, measurement conversions, PS
Week 10 — Motion, PS – Motion, speed & Accuracy, Logic & Lateral thinking.
