Maths & Reasoning Skills & Science

Core Program

A comprehensive course that develops your child’s potential in the key subject areas of Mathematics, Science and General Ability. Each lesson contains 90 minutes of training in numeracy, science and thinking skills.

Course Goals
  • Develop advanced knowledge of numbers in thousands and beyond
  • Develop numerical operations
  • Develop understandings of fractions and decimals
  • Develop a range of thinking skills (general ability) concepts
  • Develop concepts of area, time and measurement using formal & informal units
  • Develop concepts of graphing, money, chance and probability
  • Develop concepts of shape, position and temperature
  • Develop basic exam techniques and problem solving skills
  • Develop knowledge of science concepts and the scientific method through theoretical and practical learning and experimentation.
Course Structure
  • 4 terms in a year, 10 weeks in a term
  • 1.5 hour lessons per week, during term
  • Can be combined with Creative Writing (Maths & Science & General Ability + Creative Writing: 2 hour lessons per week)
  • Can be combined with English (English, Maths & Science & General Ability: 3 hour lessons per week)
  • Students attend lessons at their allocated time schedule
  • Small class group based

Week 9 — Volume of irregular solids, pie graph, Revision – Speed, Distance, Time, PS
Week 10 — Divided Bar graphs, negative numbers, PS

Term 3
Week 1 — Calculating distance, unit of measurement, maths fundamentals, PS, decimals, sum
Week 2 — Ratio and proportion, PS, challenging questions
Week 3 — Combinations, averages, percentages, challenging questions
Week 4 — Measurements, perimeter, PS, Logic & Lateral
Week 5 — Chance, Venn diagrams, the art of thinking, PS
Week 6 — Addition of number patterns, finding a term in a series, PS, exam questions
Week 7 — Simple algebra, age, degrees & angles, PS
Week 8 — Term test Applications of number patterns, graphs, PS
Week 9 — Working backwards, age problems, concept of algebra, PS challenging problems
Week 10 — Intelligent guessing, revision questions, the art of deducing, graphs, PS, Brain teasers

Term 4
Week 1 — Ratios and proportions, Algebra, General revision, PS
Week 2 — Magic sum, operation signs, revision, PS, logic and lateral thinking corner
Week 3 — Ratios & proportions, magic triangles, Venn diagrams, complex fractions, PS
Week 4 — Algebra, averages, revision – perimeter, area & volume, PS
Week 5 — Counting techniques, rations, ordering, challenging questions, PS
Week 6 — Chance & Probability, fraction, exam questions, PS
Week 7 — Area & Perimeter, miscellaneous, exam question practice, PS
